Dull skin can be a challenging thing to fight, especially if you are a woman of color. To improve the appearance of dull skin and get naturally glowing skin is the dream of every woman. Ekhambee understands your skin and works every day to help Black women with the problem of dull skin and other skin conditions. Our skin is different, it works differently, and there are certain reasons as to why our skin is distinct from others. We researched every single detail about the skin of people of color and studied anatomy to find out the exact reason why most of the times African American women face dull skin. It is usually caused by hyperpigmentation.
Hyperpigmentation is why you have dull skin. It is a condition in which a few parts of the skin appear duller than the other parts. In simpler terms, it is known as tanning, uneven skin tone, or an overall dull appearance. It happens due to the excessive production of melanin. Melanin is basically what provides pigment to the skin. It is produced by the cells melanocytes which are located in the basal layer of the skin. These cells are responsible for transferring pigment uniformly throughout the epidermis. If you are suffering from dull skin, it is due to more production of melanin than usual. It causes pigmentation and makes your skin look lifeless, taking away the natural glow.
Now that you know the main reason behind dull skin, let's take a look at some other reasons and their solutions!
Dehydrated and poor diet: Are you taking good care of yourself?
Yes, water and food have a link to your skin and can affect it greatly. Our skin's middle layer, the epidermis, contains blood vessels that absorb nutrients from the blood supply and provide it to the epidermis. If you are not taking a proper diet and are lacking essential vitamins and minerals, your skin will show.
Think of your skin as an open window to whatever's happening on the inside. If your body's health is draining, the glow from the outside will start draining as well. You may also have noticed if you are not drinking enough water your skin becomes very dry and your lips start to crack. It proves that our skin has a relation to water intake and food.
If it wasn't true, why would there be supplements for skin? There is a good variety of supplements that helps to get glowing skin. These work the same way.
Dry skin: Poor shriveled skin cells
It can happen due to two reasons, one discussed previously and the other is due to lack of moisturization. Using a good moisturizer or oil is a must! It helps plump the skin cells and brings a natural glow to the skin.
With dry skin comes many problems, like itching, cracks in the skin, wrinkles, saggy skin, and sensitivity to environmental factors. The drier your skin is the more it gets prone to becoming dull, tanned, and hyperpigmented when exposed to the sun. The water content of cells dries up and the cells become shriveled and lifeless. This is why try not to skip moisturizing your skin.
Exposure to pollutants: The gunk gets into your pores
Every day you go out, your skin is at risk of getting harmed by the pollutants in the air. With the increasing use of vehicles and the construction of industrial factories, the air is becoming polluted with chemicals. The chemicals sit on the top layer of skin and get stuck into the pores. These chemicals contain free radicals, they react with the collagen protein making the skin dry, saggy, and more prone to wrinkles. Along with that, it induces more pigment production thus leading to dull, lifeless skin.
Not having a proper skincare routine: Every step counts!
As previously discussed, our skin goes through a lot every day. And without a proper skincare routine dull skin will keep getting worse. This is why Ekhambee decided to make the best skin care products for African American skin. We are dedicated to bringing black women what their skin deserves.
